Discussions examine provocative issues raised by contemporary women from a
variety of perspectives and religious traditions. New insights are revealed
about the courageous witness of women of faith.
Program 1: Sarah and Hagar
In this program, contemporary Jewish, Muslim and Christian women discover
common ground and new understandings of each other's faith heritage in this
story of our spiritual foremothers and Biblical sisters. Guests: Rabbi Tracy
Guerin Klirs, Muslim Educator Nicole Correri, and African-American Theologian
Dr. Cheryl Sanders.
Program 2: Deborah, Jael, and Judith
The story of Deborah and Jael is told in the bible in the book of Judges
(Chapters 4-5). Deborah was a prophet, judge and leader in Israel. Jael
killed the Canaanite leader in a war of liberation. Judith's story reveals
a strong, independent woman who courageously deals with crisis. Guests:
Rabbi Janice Garfunkel, Sister Mary Irving, and Cantor Helen Leneman,
discuss violence, oppression, and women in leadership.
Program
3: Miriam, Esther and Vashti
Miriam was a risk-taker and dancing prophet who led the women in song and
dance at the Sea of Reeds. She is the first female prophet in the Hebrew scriptures.
The book of Esther tells the story of Esther and Vashti, queens who defied
oppression. Esther saved her people by working within the system. Vashti refused
to display herself as a sex object before the princes of the land. Guests:
Rev. Barbara Cullom , Sr. Mary Irving, and Cantor Helen Leneman, discuss God's
liberating word communicated through these gutsy Biblical heroines.
Program 4: Mary and Elizabeth
Mary and Elizabeth are models of woman-wisdom and witnesses to the power of
sisterhood which bonds women together to heal, liberate and transform society.
Like Mary and Elizabeth, women today can be miracles of faith as they reflect
the feminine face of God in our world. Guests: Scripture Scholar Sr. Rea McDonnell,
Muslim Educator Nicole Correri, and Sr. Mary Irving, a consultant on women's
spirituality.
Program 5: Mary of Magdala and the Woman Who Anointed Jesus' Head
According to all four Gospels, Mary of Magdala is the only person described
as being present at both the cross and the tomb. The woman who anointed Jesus'
head recognized that suffering and death are part of the mission of Jesus.
This program discusses the relationship between Jesus and women as a model
for partnership for women and men in ministry today. Guests: Scripture Scholar
Sister Rea McDonnell, and Sister Mary Irving, a consultant on women's spirituality.
Program 6: Woman with the Flow of Blood and the Canaanite Woman
This program makes the connection between the blood taboo and gender discrimination.
The Canaanite woman changed Jesus' mind about his mission. The group discusses
the impact of these two assertive women of faith on believers today. Guests:
Mary Beben, a pastoral leader of a contemporary house church, Cr. Georgian
Keightley, a theologian, and Dr. Pat Dalton, a psychologist.
Program 7: Women in Ministry in the Early Church
The group discussion focuses on women in the early church who gathered together
for the breaking of bread and table sharing. Issues that come up are women's
ordination, the discipleship of equals, and new forms of house churches that
are emerging today. Guests: Mary Beben, a pastoral leader of a contemporary
house church, Dr. Georgian Keightley, a theologian, and Dr. Pat Dalton, a
psychologist.
